1. Professional Development
Talking about contracts and aspects that need to be considered when applying for a job. Types of job and where to find them; lots of useful stuff.
2. Music and Song + Administration
This was a cleverly presented session which interlaced the (sweet) use of music in ELT lessons with the (sour) bits of administration which were needed to tie up the loose ends of this CELTA course.
We kicked off by using “Heinemann ELT Hits” (ISBN-13:9780435251000) – authentic pop songs by original artists, with fun activities to stimulate communication (1996). Perhaps it’s a bit dated now but the exercises seemed to work well. Music was “Tom’s Diner” by Suzanne Vega. Before playing the music, compare the differences between scenes without showing your partner. Play music – which of the scenes represents the music. Which passage best summarises the song. Gap-fill, and so on.
Followed by a bingo exercise based on Alanis Morissette’s “Hand in My Pocket”. Cross off the words as they’re heard.
Then Bonnie Tyler’s “I need a hero” – match beginnings of sentences with ends, gap-fills, etc.
